Premier Concrete worked with Davis Construction on a renovation project for a local apparel manufacturer in Port Covington, Baltimore. The team converted an old 200,000-s.f. Sam’s Club warehouse into Class A office and training space.

Premier installed concrete foundations, elevator pits, slab on grade, slab on deck and stadium seating for an auditorium.

“Our first contact with Davis Construction went very well,” said Premier Concrete Vice President Steve Workmeister. “We look forward to working with them again—they are an excellent contractor.”

Premier Concrete Helps Transform City Garage for Sagamore Ventures

In collaboration with Southway Builders, Premier Concrete contributed to a redevelopment effort on behalf of Sagamore Ventures in the Port Covington area of Baltimore. Headed by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, Sagamore transformed an old bus depot into an innovation hub for Under Armour and local entrepreneurs.

“As our first project with Southway, we were impressed by their team’s extremely fast pace while also completing and managing the project with high efficiency,” said Premier Concrete Vice President Steve Workmeister. “We look forward to a long-term relationship.”

Premier Contributes to BGE’s Electric Reliability Investment Initiative

In partnership with North American General Contractors, Premier Concrete is working on a multiphase project for Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE). This project aims to convert a portion of the Fallsway Properties LLC parking lot into a new 155 kV switching station for BGE.

In phase one of this project, Premier will be working on the cable vault and the responsibilities include installing stone under the mat formation, furnishing and installing concrete reinforcing, constructing concrete walls, installing embeds, and applying topping slab. In the second phase of the project, Premier will be completing site work; responsibilities will include constructing drilled pier foundations, installing ramp foundations and a wall, and working on the 1,817-square-foot sidewalk along Constitution Street.

The project is a sub-part of BGE’s Electric Reliability Investment Initiative. Under this initiative, BGE is also working on other projects in the local area that will improve the electric distribution system. These improvements will help BGE upgrade the services they provide to Baltimore City customers by minimizing the frequency and duration of time that electric service is disrupted for their customers.

Premier Concrete Awarded Another Historic Renovation Project

Under subcontract from Whiting-Turner, Premier Concrete is currently in the beginning stages of a historic renovation project for Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). The 33,000-square-foot millwork building purchased by MICA last year will become the college’s sculpture school.

“We are literally in on the ground floor of this historic renovation,” said Premier Vice President Steve Workmeister. “This is an interesting project with unique details and we are very excited to be a part of the Whiting-Turner team.”

With the long and brutal winter the region has endured, Workmeister says this project is “great winter work” because they are completing tasks inside of the building. Premier’s main responsibilities for this project are infilling various slab on grade areas, underpinning and installing a new elevator, and installing two-inch slab toppings over existing floors. Premier will also place and finish concrete for the upper-story pedestrian walkway that will connect the millwork building to the former Jos. A. Bank factory also purchased by MICA.

Estimated to be completed by May 2014, the project is part of a redevelopment and improvement campaign pursued by MICA over the past decade. Click here to read more about this project.

Celebrating the Anniverary of Everyman Theatre

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND—Just over a year ago, Premier Concrete worked alongside Lewis Contractors to restore the iconic Everyman Theatre. The renovation and reopening of the Theatre played an important role in the renaissance of a theater and arts district in downtown Baltimore’s Westside. This month marked the one-year anniversary of the Theatre’s first public performance in the newly renovated space.

The project consisted of extensive exterior and interior restoration and measures were taken to ensure the historical features of the property were preserved. The Everyman Theatre now features multiple performance spaces with modernized theatre audio/visual systems. Premier Concrete was responsible for the installation of new foundations, walls, flat work and elevated deck pours.

“The Everyman Theatre renovation was an exciting and meaningful project to be a part of,” says Premier Concrete Vice President, Steve Workmeister. “We are thrilled to see the Theatre thriving a year later, and wish them continued success in their new home for many years to come.”

Originally opened as The Empire in 1910, Everyman Theatre has been home to many different types of performances and entertainment, from vaudeville to burlesque to a 1,550-seat movie house. After falling into disrepair in 1990, the venue was donated to the Everyman Theatre in 2006. Premier Joins the Downtown Inner Harbor Redevelopment Effort

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND—With the award of yet another renovation project, Premier Concrete is working in partnership with Constantine Commercial Construction to expand what is commonly known as “The Examiner building” at 400 E. Pratt St. in downtown Baltimore.

The two-story expansion consists of a building addition that will extend the structure 35 feet closer to the street and increase overall square footage from 143,750 to 167,570 square feet, resulting in approximately 24,000 square feet of ground level retail and 24,500 square feet of class A office space on the second level. Major changes include improvements to the multi-tenant common corridors, lobbies, elevators and restrooms; and enhancements to the parking garage. Premier is contracted to install building foundations, slab on grade, slab on deck and other miscellaneous concrete site work.

Expected to be complete in June 2014, the renovation is part of the Downtown Baltimore Partnership Inc. new redevelopment plan to make Pratt Street more pedestrian friendly, improve sightlines and boost the downtown economy.

“Constantine Commercial Construction has provided us a wonderful opportunity to improve one of Baltimore’s landmark buildings,” says Premier Concrete Vice President Steve Workmeister. “Adding retail and restaurant tenants will make this area even more vibrant. We are excited to be on Constantine’s team and an integral part of this project.”

While the two ground floor restaurant tenants have yet to be announced, CPA firm, Ellin & Tucker confirmed it will be relocating to the new space and will become a significant tenant in the office space. By September 2014, Ellin & Tucker will occupy 31,000 square feet total on two floors, including the entire second floor and 7,000 square feet on the third floor.

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND—Premier Concrete is working with Lewis Contractors to construct a state-of-the-art Learning Activity Center and residential cottages for The Maryland School for the Blind. This construction is part of a multiphase campus improvement project for several new academic and residential buildings on The Maryland School for the Blind campus.

Joining the project in July 2013, Premier’s responsibilities include concrete foundations, concrete walls, slab on grade, slab on deck and other miscellaneous site work for the 32,000 square-foot Academic Building and 26,000 square-foot Cottage Building.

Premier Concrete’s long history with Lewis Contractors includes other notable projects such as the renovation of Everyman Theatre in Baltimore City’s Arts and Entertainment District in 2012, and the Carey Hall renovation and Kindergarten building at the prestigious Gilman School.

Premier Concrete Reconstructing the Rouse Company Building Into a Whole Foods Market

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND—Premier Concrete is working in concert with The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company to renovate the historic Rouse Company Building into a Whole Foods Market in Columbia, Md.

The four-floor structure will undergo extreme restoration and renovation, with plans to remove the second floor in order to create a double height space for the store. Whole Foods Market will occupy the main level, with a fitness center on the lower level.

Located on Lake Kittamaqundi, the former headquarters of the Rouse Company is an iconic centerpiece of downtown Columbia. Designed and built by renowned architect Frank Gehry for Columbia founder, James Rouse, the structure represents the pioneering vision Rouse had in building and creating the planned community of Columbia in the 1960s.

The introduction of a Whole Foods Market will be the first of its kind within proximity to downtown Columbia. The nearest Whole Foods Market is currently located in Harbor East in Baltimore.
